Although not technically autumn until the 23rd this year, September 1st always signifies new season to me. That in mind, I’ve put together my top 5 ways to update your autumn makeup bag.
From primer to palettes, extra coverage and luxe skincare, look no further than my edit of perfect products. Press restart with all your latest beauty buys, in just 5 simple steps.
1. Update your primer
With cold weather approaching, your base layer needs to change. Eve Lom Perfect Matte Primer SPF15 (£42) is brand new this September, refining skin to reduce the appearance of blemishes and fine lines. Infused with Rice Powder and Swiss Alpine Flower, the primer is both anti-inflammatory and brightening. A completely lightweight formula, it fits easily under foundation and non-comedogenic qualities ensure less oil production. Even working hard to conceal acne scars, this primer is definitely one to have in your makeup bag arsenal.
If like me your skin changes with the season, this primer will pack a protecting and perfecting punch this autumn.
2. Turn up the coverage
After a long summer of tinted moisturiser and lighter face layers, it’s time to take your foundation up a notch. Moisturising, lightweight and extremely long-lasting, Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer (£25) is a multi-tasking marvel. Available in a whopping 20 shades, it suits all skin tones and is packed with pigment to provide flawless coverage.
Significantly streamlining my makeup routine, it goes on easily, whether via your fingers or a brush. The 2-in-1 foundation covers up eye bags, blemishes and stressed out skin, before staying put all day. Seriously, it literally doesn’t budge. And, you can also say ta-ra to that horrendous cakey foundation feel.
Minimising the need for a million and one makeup bag buys, remove the time spent rummaging for your concealer and foundation with this brilliant buy.
A top pick go-to brand, Lipstick Queen have got it bang on with their Oxymoron blusher. Priced at £22, and available from Space NK, this little pot can technically be used as both a lip and cheek product.
Combining a matte and creme effect (hence the Oxymoron title), I apply this blusher using a brush but you could as easily use fingers. Amazed by how long it stays put on cheeks, the blush-effect shines through. It is hands down the most durable blusher I’ve used recently.
Whether you choose a natural or bold colour, there’s a fab selection of shades to select from. At the moment, I’m using Minor Crisis; a gorgeous autumnal shade, and also because I like the dramatic title. Slimline and handbag sized, you may even want to go for a couple of colours.
4. Invest in a luxe face mask
With the blog love I show for Gazelli Skincare, it’s probably no surprise that their Ultra Nourishing Saviour Mask (£40) is my all time favourite pick-me-up. Well worth the splurge, a little bit of this mask goes a long way and the product itself will last you a good few months.
Particularly in autumn as the dark nights draw in, there’s nothing better than a restorative face mask, overflowing bubble bath and a glass of red. Ticking all the skincare boxes, I like to leave this mask on overnight for a full facial replenish. After a decent dose of Gazelli, skin is radiant, soft, plumped-up and supple.
A definite must for cold, wet, wintery days, I can see this Triple Youth product being your new skincare best friend.
5. Pick new season colours
Last but not least, and probably the most obvious- choose new season colours. Be inspired by the colours on the catwalk or seen in Vogue, as you can guarantee this is the simplest way to wear them. Pick a palette which captures your complexion, or even that you simply love.
It’s worth spending more money on just one set, because it will last you through autumn and beyond. Top of my list is the Clarins Limited Edition Pretty Day 5-Colour Eyeshadow Palette (£33). Last year’s Clarins Christmas palette is still my most used set, with their shadows always leaving long-lasting and enchanting eye colour.
The Pretty Day Clarins palette covers natural autumnal warmth, including soft beige, taupe and brown. Complete with a dual ended applicator, this isn’t just one of those naff throwaway brushes you usually get in eyeshadow boxes. An expert blending tool and another perk to paying the extra pounds, it will enable you to create a subtle shimmer or layer up for a bolder look.
