A couple of weekends ago, the Mr and I returned to our favourite North East hotel and restaurant, Jesmond Dene House, for a blissful review stay.
Located in Jesmond near Newcastle, you’ll find this exquisite four star boutique hotel set amongst a beautiful leafy backdrop. You can venture for walks in the nearby Jesmond Dene or simply enjoy the view. We actually had our wedding reception there 8 years ago, and by happy coincidence, during this stay our room was above that suite.
Check-in is from 3pm, yet we arrived a little early, which gave us the perfect excuse to have a glass of wine in the gorgeous bar area. The house itself is steeped in North East cultural history and is a Grade II listed building. A stunning traditional design, many of the original features remain, such as the rich wood-panelled walls. Becoming Newcastle’s first independently owned boutique hotel in 2005, signature interior details are classic yet modern, plus undoubtedly stylish and timeless.
Our gorgeous room was part of the original house, but we have stayed in newer parts of the hotel before, including the New House building which is adjacent to the main reception. There are 40 rooms and these cover everything from classic to deluxe and superior rooms. In addition, you’ll find junior suites alongside the noble suite with private terrace, or the apartment suite which has a dining terrace and private staircase.
Each room feels unique and bespoke. I particularly loved the chic black and white wallpaper feature wall in this room, mirroring the woodland setting. A massive ornate mirror makes up most of the wall above the bath and there are gorgeous ceilings and light fittings throughout the entire place. All details making this independent hotel such a masterpiece and really a magical place to stay.
After exploring our luxurious room, complete with White Company goodies in the bathroom, we took a trip into nearby Newcastle for a potter around the shops and have a drink on the Quayside. Returning for dinner later, we had very much looked forward to our meal in the run up to our stay, well aware of the delicious dishes that would be on offer.
Jesmond Dene House are renowned for their fantastic chefs, incredible menu and amazing food. The restaurant feels bright and vibrant, with a calm atmosphere. Plus, the stripy floor gets my vote every time. A place to enjoy breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, the team always exceed expectation. The restaurant are extremely accommodating to dietary requirements; they were in fact one of the first hotels I visited to tailor their menu to my gluten and dairy free diet. On this occasion, I was presented with my own menu, alongside yummy freshly baked gluten free bread.
To start, I had the Salad of Ham Hock with Garden Gooseberries and Apple, while my husband tucked into the Chicken Liver Parfait plus Onion Marmalade and Toasted Brioche. Both dishes looked absolutely divine, and as always, the flavours were extremely good and so incredibly more-ish.
Service was as superb as the food, with the restaurant team looking after us and expertly guiding our menu choices. For the main course, I chose the Himalayan Salt Aged 8oz Sirloin Steak with Watercress, Radish Salad and Fries. Just writing this is making my mouth water and I long to be eating these dishes again right now.
My other half plumped for the Himalayan Salt Aged Flat Iron Steak, with Bearnaise Sauce, Watercress and Chips. This looked (and tasted, by all accounts) spectacular too. The chips were chunky while mine were fries and both the steaks tasted succulent.
Onto the pudding part, and by this point we were both so full of sumptuous grub, there was no room for dessert. However, I know that my husband would always go for the Dark Chocolate Sphere with Salted Caramel, Peanuts and Caramel Ice Cream.
After a tranquil and comfy night’s sleep, we headed down to breakfast. Sitting in the Garden Room (an extension of the restaurant) and looking out onto a beautiful summer’s day of greenery, we sipped fresh coffee and worked our way through fruit, pastries, yoghurt and cereals before moving onto our cooked meals.
Always a firm choice of mine, I tucked into Eggs Montreal, which set me up for the day nicely. Mr B had the Eggs Benedict, also looking absolutely delicious. As we enjoyed our food, we sipped freshly squeezed orange juice.
Just before checking out at midday, I met up with a very dear friend of mine who lives nearby, alongside her lovely mum and baby twins. Drinking coffee in the same bar and lounge area we had our drinks the night before, this shows how versatile Jesmond Dene House is as a venue. There’s also a second lounge area just across the corridor, with more than enough space for lots of guests and visitors.
Private dining options are available, and you can meet up for a relaxed coffee or a drink after walking in Jesmond Dene, or tucking into various food treats. Always greeted with a warm welcome, beautiful interiors and a calming environment, it definitely won’t be long until we are back again for our next trip to Jesmond Dene House.
