Summer Holiday Staycation

I’ve taken a total summer break this last week; from emails, social media and my phone in general. For our main holiday of the year we have been renting a gorgeous cottage by the Northumberland coast.

Just up the road from where we live, it’s been a real home-from-home escape. I know how easy it is to be distracted by messages and the outside world, so I made it a rule that I would leave my phone locked in the car. Feeling a bit frazzled before we left, the usual juggling act had been wearing me down. So I was more than ready to escape it all, even though that meant staying in the same county.

At the end of our week I’ve demolished four books, taken the odd (read: every day) afternoon nap and downed plenty of alcoholic drinks and plates of delicious food. Also wanting to minimise screen time for the kids, they have drawn, played, read and run wild in the coastal air. It has been utter bliss.

It’s amazing how quickly the change has lifted away stresses and strains. Even avoiding watching the news has been a relief. That constant obligation to keep all lines of communication going can sometimes leave no time left to breathe and just be.

We’ve climbed across rocks, scoured beaches and become more than a little bit windswept beside the North Sea. Weirdly, although I’ve lived in this area most of my life, it has still felt like a holiday in the truest sense of the word.

As a child, we spent holidays in Scotland and the coastline was always a huge part of this. So it’s been reminiscent of those years, watching my kids make their own happy memories in turn. Although hot holidays are glorious, who needs a plane to get away? Plus, the sun has shone and we’ve been extremely lucky with the weather.

Refreshed and ready to return to our routine, I would thoroughly recommend exploring the hidden gems of your local area and going for a week long digital detox too. Stripping the bigger picture back to what is most important in life, you will feel so much better for it. I know I do.
