Earlier this week, we took the kids to Thaikhun at the Metro Centre in Gateshead, a vibrant Thai restaurant specialising in Bangkok street food.
Greeted with a warm Thaikhun welcome, we were shown to our table and I instantly noticed the colourful and exotic decor, especially the bold lights and little details. Decorated from floor to ceiling, you will find crate wall hangings, lights strung across walkways, and even the taps in the toilet are eye-catching. All creating a fun atmosphere, the kids instantly felt at home too.
Definitely a family friendly restaurant, the team bought the children their starters and mains at the same time as our first course arrived. Both little ones chose vegetable sticks to start plus plain noodles and chicken with green Thai curry sauce, which they happily tucked into. Meanwhile, we also snacked on crackers with a tangy sweet chilli sauce.
There’s the option to have creepy crawlies brought to the table for kids. A fantastic quirk which my son would have loved, we had to turn it down as I suspect this may have put my squeamish daughter off her meal. It was great to get offered the option either way and is well worth bearing in mind for entertaining intrepid mini restaurant explorers.
I was given my own gluten free menu and for a starter I picked the Raw Papaya Salad, followed by Phad Thai with Prawns plus Phad Phak Ruam (stir fried vegetables). All dishes absolutely delicious, the flavours were fresh and tasty. Although we ate a lot, I didn’t feel uncomfortably full as the food is refreshing too. The Phad Thai was a lovely warming comfort meal which I’d happily eat several times a week.
My husband had Kan Nom Jeeb Dumplings to start and a Chicken and Cashew Nut Stir Fry for his main course. Colourfully presented, the dumplings were accompanied with a dip and by all accounts, the stir fry was equally enjoyable.
Our puddings comprised chocolate ice cream for the kids (always a winner), an absolutely amazing gluten free Chocolate Tart for me and the Mr had Waffles with Thai Whisky Iice Cream. Safe to say, we were all in dessert heaven.
During our meal, Assistant Manager Mimi tended to our every need. Even when I accidentally ate an entire chilli whole, halfway through my starter..oops. Service was great and the whole team are helpful and attentive. Lovely Business Manager Mandy then met up with us at the end of our meal and we talked through how much we’d enjoyed our Thaikhun experience.
I’d thoroughly recommend a trip to Thaikhun, whether you fancy a date night, girls lunch or family friendly outing. There’s something for everyone and you will leave satisfied, happy and full of sumptuous Thai street food.
