Keeping the Kindness

Core Classics 5

This year has brought so much turmoil due to global political events, which I’m not even going to begin to discuss for fear of being here all night. However, these changes have brought home the importance of kindness, both across the globe and in our day-to-day lives, something I feel so passionate about.

The smallest of gestures can ease a person’s pain or support them during a difficult time, and even just remind someone that we are all in this life together. No matter how strong or self-assured we can look on the outside, kindness has to be key.

At the supermarket the other day, I was battling a super tired child and trying to pay the cashier. My little one wanted a toy out of one of those machines you pop coins into and twist a lever, releasing a Disney pod with miniature treat. Sensing the struggle, the lovely lady serving me gave an understanding smile. Hearing my refusal to give money to this machine, she told T that it was broken. This instantly quelled his fury at me, and totally ended the argument. A small gesture, she made my harassed afternoon much easier by offering total and utter kindness.

I know we’re always told to treat people how we’d expect to be treated, but it goes further than this. A coffee or a message; even that silent acknowledgement in the street can help. We can get so bogged down with the negativity in the world,  it can be tough to remember and cherish the uplifting stuff.

Just last week I happened to mention something in passing to an Instagram pal, and she immediately messaged me to check I was OK. This is somebody I haven’t met before and who didn’t need to spend her time getting in touch, yet by going above and beyond, she really warmed my heart.

That may sound soppy, but it is 100% true. I smiled at her kindness, and felt totally cheered. Such an act is as simple as being kind needs to be.

Plus, showing love and support towards someone else makes you feel pretty good too.
