Christmas Love, Ten Years Later

Today is a very special day. And I’ll tell you all about it.

Ten years ago on Saturday 15th December, my sister Sally and I headed out to a Maximo Park gig. Completely unaware of what was ahead, we giggled in the taxi and danced with huge excitement at the venue.

To set the scene: that previous summer Maximo Park music had reached me in a way I can’t describe. I listened to their music day and night, constantly. When my brother and his now wife suggested we all go see the band play in Dundee October 2007 it was the perfect plan.

But I keeled over at the gig, cutting it short. It was such a shame, and I felt strongly that this wasn’t how it was supposed to go. Just a sense, a hunch this incredible music could change my life.

I found out Maximo Park were planning a homecoming gig in December, so my Mum’s cousin asked her ex-husband for a favour, as he had a link to the band.

That Saturday in December, I then got a text “Helen Wilson, plus one, guest list tonight”. Completely over the moon, I’d even spent all week planning an outfit just in case.

It will sound daft but I swear there was a moment during the gig that I had this sense of magical euphoria.

We skipped to the after party, and I even spoke to the band’s epic keyboard player, Lukas, telling him how much their music meant to me.

Meanwhile, a young man called Chris was also on course for the after party, as his friend had been in Maximo Park’s latest music video. He was a bit hungover from his work Christmas night out the previous evening, and it was touch and go whether he’d make it.

However, make it he did, and when said handsome hunk rocked up at the free bar, I turned around and exclaimed how cold it was (the venue’s balcony doors were open and I just wanted an excuse to make conversation).

Basically, I did the bad sister thing and ditched Sally to flirt with Chris all night. Sorry, Sal. At the time, I always judged a man by his shoes and his had keeper all over them.

We had our first date less than a week later, and after years of being told off by my friends for being too fussy, I knew I’d met my man.

Three months post-gig we were engaged, our wedding day was six months later, and baby L arrived nine months after our honeymoon.

With a gorgeous family of our own, and lots of life experience in between, here we are.

Thank you, Maximo Park, for bringing us together.
